Blitz Diary 1940

Living in Deptford the family were near the London Docks which were a major strategic target for the German bombers. Shirley kept a record of all the raids starting in August 1940. Her father, Solomon, not only kept their milliner's shop open but also was an Air Raid Warden. By mid-September they had decided that Deptford was just too dangerous and moved out to stay with relatives in Edgware on the NW outskirts of London  - which also was also bombed occasionally -  while they looked for a house in the area.  Although the history books have the London Blitz starting on September 7th ('Black Saturday') it's clear from the diary that the bombing raids started nearly a month earlier.

(Interesting Guardian article on the start of the London blitz)
